Pilates is a combination of exercise sequences originating from 34 original moves. These movements work the entire body as a whole from the centre of the body (known as the core) as well as individual stabilising muscles.
During our classes in Northampton, we explore Pilates with the use of:
- Magic Circle
- Bands
- Small Pilates Ball]
- Foam Rollers
- Spikey balls
- Glides
- Tennis Balls
Originally designed and developed by German born Joseph Pilates. Joseph was a sickly child, suffering from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. His drive and determination to overcome these ailments led him to become a competent gymnast, diver and skier.
After moving to the UK in 1912, Joseph started working as a circus performer, boxer and self-defence instructor. During the First World War, he was interned with other German nationals and it was during this time he developed his technique of physical fitness further, by teaching his fellow internees.
Joseph and his wife emigrated to the USA in the early 1920s and together they developed and taught the method in their 'body-conditioning gym' in New York. His technique grew very popular with dancers and ballerinas.
His methods have gradually evolved over the decades but the 6 principles remain the same and are still being taught today. They are:
- Breath
- Concentration
- Centring
- Control
- Precision
- Flow
Pilates is also beneficial if you're recovering from a recent illness or operation, pre or post-natal, suffer with a bad back or want to improve your flexibility.
