Hormone Spotlight at Peri-Menopause

Your hormones at perimenopause are like a rollercoaster of high peaks and quick descends.  This impacts on your physical, mental and emotional health, leaving you questioning many aspects of your health and wellbeing.

The most common physical symptoms are hot flushes, weight gain and fatigue, but are we over-looking psychological issues, or just unaware they are linked to perimenopause?

What we do know, is females suffer in one way or another at this point in thier lives, therefore the need to address the biopyschosocial effect is crucial.

  • Bio - mechanical and biological changes
  • Psycho - Psychological changes
  • Social - Social and cultural environment

Studies indicate that females who have had harder upbringings and exposure to trauma, suffer more with perimenopause symptoms than those who haven't.  This is a major breakthrough to show that psychological changes can be more debilitating for some females than the physical changes that occur.

We now know that chronic stress has a direct impact on the brain and body resulting in biological, psychological and auto-immune dysfunction.  My advice here would be to start making proactive lifestyle changes that involve stress management, self-care and complimentary therapies.

Those massages you have put off because you're too busy or the yoga class you've always wanted to go to, are going to be what pulls you into your parasympathetic nervous system (which restores calmness) and out of the stress response.

On top of this you have oestrogen decline but also oestrogen dominance.  This is because both oestrogen and progesterone start to decline at perimenopause, but progesterone does so at a quicker rate, resulting in oestrogen being dominant.

Hormones affect everything and everything affects hormones, therefore your approach to wellbeing and self-care is no longer optional.  We can not just rely on good genetics because global statistics for heart disease and osteoporosis are way too high.  Sadly, both of these conditions are linked to menopause and lifesyle factors.
