Today is National Fitness Day (26th September) and to highlight the importance of physical activity and the role it plays across the UK, I am encouraging you to double your daily step count!
The recommended daily step goal is currently 10,000 per day. Â This was designed to get you started with tracking and give you motivation to keep a certain level of activity. Â An average persons stride is between 2.1 – 2.5 feet, which means it takes over 2,000 steps to walk 1 mile, and approx 10,000 to walk 5.
To help celebrate physical fitness and activity, could you double your average, for just one day?
If you’re already tracking your steps and not quite making it to 10,000, aim to double your daily average for #fitnessday then work on increasing your normal step count by 500 per week until you’re at target.
Whether you’re on holiday, working or training, there’s always an opportunity to increase your daily steps. Â Below are a few ideas of what you can do:
- Walk to work
- Walk to the shop
- Take the children/grandchildren to the park
- Take a walking lunch
- Walk the dog
- Meet a friend for a walk rather than coffee
- Take the stairs instead of the lift or escalator
- Treadmill at home
Why not challenge a friend to a healthy competition and see who walks the furthest?
